Contractor Community – June 2023

ASA’s 2023 D.C. Fly-In

On June 13-15, ASA advocated on Capitol Hill to ensure the voices of subcontractors, who makeup the three-fourths of the construction industry, were heard throughout the halls of Congress. We had over forty ASA members from around the country attend this year’s fly-in, who met with 28 Senate offices and 21 House offices. During our welcome reception and dinner, we heard remarks from Rep. Stauber (R-MN), the co-chair of the Congressional Procurement Caucus, and we were joined by Mike Oscar’s colleagues from the Construction Industry Procurement Coalition (CIPC). We advocated for change order, retainage, workforce development, and permitting reform, proper bid listing opportunities, along with ensuring payment and performance bonds are aligned with public-private partnership projects (P3s) (please see ASA’s 2023 Legislative Priority White Paper). Our fly-in is especially timely as the House Armed Services Committee began debate on the FY24 National Defense Authorization Act (HR 2670), which contains procurement-related issues important to the construction industry.

ENR Launching Annual Specialty Contractor Competitions

In October 2023, Engineering News-Record (ENR) will release its 46th annual Top 600 Specialty Contractors list to its estimated three million unique yearly visitors. Ranked by year-end construction-specific revenue and categorized by the type of construction services provided, the leading subcontractors and specialty trade contractors in the U.S. will compete in our pages for the top positions in their chosen specialties. If you feel your firm belongs in this elite group, we encourage you to complete our Top 600 survey.

The Top 600 survey is completed entirely through our online survey portal and there is no cost to participate. If your firm is interested in being notified when the survey launches on Monday, June 26th, please email Jonathan Keller at kellerj@enr.com, and he can get your firm on our notification list.

Launched June 5th are ENR’s Regional Top Specialty surveys, which rank specialty firms by total construction revenue in each of ENR’s ten regions. Firms may file in multiple regions, if they have applicable revenue in those regions, as well filing a national survey. If your firm is interested in completing a Regional Top Specialty survey, please email Jack McMackin at mcmackinj@enr.com.

AMPP Calls Upon ASA’s Input

The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) is calling upon ASA to review and provide feedback on AMPP’s drafted response to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regarding blood lead levels. Given our association’s significant experience and dedication to worker safety, AMPP believes our input would be invaluable in refining their position and strengthening our mutual advocacy efforts. AMPP’s response to OSHA aims to address the evolving challenges and potential health risks associated with blood lead levels in our industry. Their objective is to ensure worker safety while considering the practical implications for businesses within our industry.  By sharing their response with ASA, they are seeking our perspective and insights regarding the proposed measures, as well as any additional suggestions or concerns we may have. Mike Oscar will keep you posted on our collaborative efforts.
