Always Something Awesome – Recap, Highlights, Awards, and Moments in Time

SUBExcel2024 - in the review mirror

The 2024 edition of SUBExcel is now history. But we can’t forget all the hard work, time, and fun we had yet.

First off, let’s congratulate those who were recognized this year with awards for their achievements:

Extraordinary Contribution to ASA:

LaRae Rose, Executive Director, ASA – Southwest Florida Chapter

In September 2022, Hurricane Ian slammed into SW Florida. LaRae and her team got down to work to help each other and their neighbors recover any way they could. At the end of 2022 Southwest Florida had about 25 paid members. Early in 2023 when they were trying to figure a way to get past the hurricane, it was tough to ask people to join, when there were so many other priorities. But LaRae didn’t stop. LaRae and her chapter rolled up their sleeves and GOT TO WORK.

Since then this chapter and the attorney’s council have created a dynamic resource guide… a toolkit for chapters and members who are victimized by a natural disaster. Unfortunately, natural disasters will continue to occur. So what a great way to make lemonade out of that bucket of lemons!  The chapter is meeting. There is education (breakfast briefings), there is networking! A casino night last fall. A successful clay shoot last month. And as of last month, there are 39 or 40 paid members of the SW Florida Chapter. And they continue to bring in new members.

Subcontractors Federal Advocate Award –

Ike Casey, ASA of Metro Washington Chapter

Ike’s dedication to understanding and addressing subcontractors’ challenges makes him a true advocate. He has been instrumental in educating subcontractors about national and local laws and regulations, significantly aiding in the operation of more sustainable businesses.

Under Ike’s guidance, ASAMW has seen the passage of substantial legislation. His influence in establishing prompt payment laws and enhancing payment transparency across DC and Maryland showcases his capability to effect real change. He has initiated and led task forces addressing critical issues in construction, such as slow payment processes, wage theft, and human trafficking. Through his active participation as Secretary of the Alliance for Construction Excellence (ACE), Ike stays on top of local (DC, VA, MD) regulations.

Ike’s current leadership in addressing change orders, fairness in contract negotiations, and timely payment of project retainage further exemplifies his commitment to long-term industry betterment. His active role in future-focused initiatives, including payment reform and retainage reform, reflects his forward-thinking approach.

Subcontractor State Advocate Award –

Karen Palacek, legal counsel and board member of ASA of Arizona

For over a decade, Karen has served in many roles including as legal counsel for the  chapter, a member of the board of directors, and she leads the chapter’s Attorneys Council. Per her fellow board members, her prompt and thorough reviews, insightful comments, and the background she provides on federal and/or state legislative language have proven to be essential in navigating the complex legal landscape of Arizona. This along with the amount of time she has given for the association is why she has earned this award.

Additionally, Karen has taught (or utilized other members to teach) seminars on a myriad of topics such as prompt pay laws, lien rights, bankruptcy, and many more. But her efforts do not stop at the attorneys’ Council. She co-chairs ASA of Arizona’s “Build Her Up Women’s Peer Group” and has helped plan mixers and courses on negotiation for women in construction among other events.

Finally, her board wanted to highlight her responsiveness to the ASA Government Relations team. Her achievements in legislative reform, case law, and dedication to the subcontracting community make her deserving of the 2023 ASA State Advocacy Award.

ASA Outstanding Service Award –

Duane Coy – ASA of Oklahoma

Duane’s outstanding contributions make him an exceptionally deserving recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. The phrase “above and beyond” doesn’t begin to encapsulate his dedication and impact. One remarkable quality that sets Duane apart is his remarkable responsiveness. He’s always just a call away, even on the golf course. His willingness to assist colleagues and associates underscores his deep commitment to the ASA community.

Duane has played a pivotal role in propelling the growth of several ASA events, significantly enhancing their success. What truly sets Duane apart is his dedication. He doesn’t hesitate to show up early or stay late to ensure that everything runs seamlessly.

Duane’s contributions aren’t confined to the foreground; he often works diligently behind the scenes, making phone calls and handling crucial tasks before events even take place. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in his willingness to review budgets and explore new marketing strategies. He consistently seeks innovative ways to attract new sponsors and enhance experiences. His forward-thinking approach and adaptability are invaluable to ASA.

Duane is a shining example of commitment and service. His contributions have elevated ASA in the best way possible.

Angie Wentz – ASA of Western Pennsylvania

The Western Pa chapter has an energetic board of directors supported by strong committees. Angie helps leadership achieve the goals set each year. She’s the one in the trenches making the calls to event planners, trade schools, high schools, unions, and prospective members. Networking events, monthly meetings, and scholarship program are successful because of her hard work and dedication. She attends committee meetings and keeps the planning focused. She maintains meticulous records of lessons learned from past events. Most importantly, Angie is extremely organized and keeps committees on task to ensure programs are successful.

ASA of WPA had 20 members when Angie started in 2002. Angie has been vital to the chapter’s growth to 100 members. Angie gets to know each company and the person or people attending our events. Her knowledge helps members get the most from ASA membership and helps her identify individuals who might serve as leaders. This approach helped transform the Western PA board over the past decade.

She’s incredibly passionate about the Western PA chapter and what it stands for. Angie’s chapter has the utmost respect for her. As Angie is retiring this year, we could not let the evening pass without showing our utmost gratitude for Angie and her dedication and service to ASA.

Timmy L. McLaughlin Exemplary Leadership Award –

Tammy Hasselwander, Retired Executive Director of ASA of Oklahoma

Tami Hasselwander has made such a significant impact on the ASAOK and the construction industry through her continued leadership and service. Her long-standing commitment and selfless service over the years have undoubtedly shaped the organization’s trajectory and contributed to its success. Since becoming a member in 2005, she has continuously demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication. Her impressive journey within our organization, which includes serving on the board of directors and even holding the position of president twice, showcases her commitment to the organization’s mission. Additionally, her five-year tenure as the Executive Director further underscores her invaluable contributions to ASAOK.

During a challenging period, she took the initiative to restore order and effectiveness within the association. Her efforts to revamp and reorganize this association included breathing new life into neglected committees. Through meticulous planning and dedicated hard work, she brought back structure to the organization. This initiative ensured that each committee had a clear purpose, reducing confusion and delays. These revitalized committees fostered in-depth discussions and research on critical issues, enhancing the overall functionality of ASAOK. Her ability to straighten and narrow the ship created an environment where the board could focus on more pressing matters facing the construction industry.

Beyond her organizational leadership, she also served as a driving force behind crucial legislative efforts. Her unique blend of passion, determination, and leadership skills inspired colleagues and fellow legislators to take meaningful action on important issues affecting the construction industry. Her involvement in initiatives like revising retainage policies and advocating for in-state preference legislation for Oklahoma Subcontractors reflects her commitment to creating a fair and equitable environment for all. Furthermore, she recognized the importance of diversifying and engaging a broader range of voices within the organization. Her innovative outreach strategies, mentorship programs, and commitment to inclusivity attracted a new and younger generation of participants to ASAOK. Her ability to connect with and educate younger generations through networking and advocacy initiatives has brought fresh perspectives and energy to the association.

President of the Year

Tyler Althouse – President of ASA Houston Chapter

After guiding a new Executive Director in 2021-22,  in 2022-23, the mission became: GROWTH. Through his leadership: two new board members were recruited, board engagement increased through committee/peer group liaisons, membership retention saw a record 90%, and net growth increased by 9 members. Part-time administrative help was secured to allow the ED to concentrate more on membership recruitment efforts.

Additionally, the chapter saw increased attendance throughout all events and instituted a very successful “GC Partners Program” which has proven to be a powerful membership recruitment/retention tool. Before his term ended, he partnered with the board vice president to hold a board retreat and strategic planning session. Because growth was occurring organically, the consensus of the board was that chapter leaders needed to work on improving engagement/participation next. Tyler led the board in laying the groundwork for the incoming president – with tangible goals and objectives for both short-and-long term. Tyler has proven very exceptional at leading through change! ASA Houston wrapped up the 2022-23 fiscal year by exceeding budget expectations and increasing investments significantly, ensuring the organization continues to have strong financial health!

Tyler has been a part of the ASA Houston board since 2011; six of those years he spent in the executive chairs. He actively mentors the chapter’s “young leaders peer group” to ensure a sustainable membership as we experience generational shifts in leadership.

Exec Dir of the Year

Jennifer Swinney – Executive Director of ASA San Antonio Chapter

Jenn can often be heard saying “ASA San Antonio is on fire” – but there’s only one reason why – Jenn is San Antonio’s firecracker! What sets her apart from others is her passion for ASA.  Where most people get up, go to work, and go home for the day, Jennifer never sees ASA as a job.  She works as if ASA is an extension of herself.

Since the time Jenn was hired, she has dedicated her life to ASA. It sounds cliché to say that she works “sun up to sun down” with no breaks. But that is the actual case–for over 8 years Jenn worked from the time she woke up to the time she went to bed, including nights, weekends, and holidays. She was hired to help “rebuild” a dying chapter and she took the task seriously. And in 8 years she’s renewed the San Antonio chapter! San Antonio went from 90 to over 220 members and general Contractor partners – that’s 244% growth!

This chapter went from bleeding losses each year to enough profitability to hire 3 incredible full time staffers.

San Antonio’s success is because Jenn has enthusiasm and passion to ignite chapter leaders and  members to get excited about volunteering and being part of something great! What truly sets Jenn apart from others in the pack is her grit. When the chapter needed a new website, but couldn’t afford to hire a company, Jenn set out to learn how to build one and designed an intricate and detailed website complete with a searchable database.

When SanAntonio wanted to start promoting on social media, Jenn taught herself how to use the various platforms and now makes multiple daily posts with great engagement from the industry.   When they wanted to start making video content, Jenn took the time to study and learn how to use video software to create content.  She then went the extra step to reinvent the awards night to have pre-recorded skits by the board in TV and movie themes to entertain the attendees and the result was an event that has become so popular we had to find a new venue to hold more people, and then still maxed out the new venue!

After events, Jenn wants to make sure that sponsors and participants feel celebrated and appreciated for contributing, so she finds  photos  of  individuals  at  the  event  and  sends  a custom personalized  thank  you  card  to  each  person  with  their  picture  from  the  event  to  display in their office. It doesn’t stop there! Jenn respects that volunteers are donating their time

and resources to be part of ASA, so she works tirelessly to have everything for our events hyper-organized to ensure that everyone feels important to the cause, and never feels like they wasted a day.

We are happy to name Jenn Swinney as ASA’s ED of the Year as she is most deserving of it.

Chapter of the Year Award

Under 50 Members – ASA of Central Pennsylvania

This year ASA of Central Pennsylvania reached 50 member companies! This was a 100% increase from October of 2014. They had a busy year hosting monthly safety and health roundtables featuring topics such as Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Suicide in Construction. This chapter hosted networking events such as a Golf Outing, Meet the GC Expos, Schmooze & Brews Networking Events, a pub crawl, clay shoot and Women in Construction Events, Night Out at the Ball Game and even a Bowling Tournament. But it wasn’t just all fun in Central PA. They put on educational seminars and a half day construction symposium.

Between 50 – 100 Members – ASA of New Mexico

This past fiscal year, ASA of NM had 8 luncheon presentations, 7 happy hour events, 4 training sessions via the New Mexico Construction Safety Coalition, 3 joint events with other industry entities, 1 partner member only dinner with open discussion with their Board and the GC Members, 2 Board of Directors and Past President’s Club team building events, 1 ASA Night at the minor league baseball game, 1 golf tournament and one annual awards event. They have been and remain in net growth, they have multiple national board members…as of July 1st two on the Executive Committee, and their Executive Director is chair of the ED Council. Amazing!

Over 100 Members – ASA of Mississippi

ASA of Mississippi…has excelled in member growth, events and legislative recognition throughout the year. Mississippi’s membership committee has successfully focused on member participation in the chapter which has increased chapter income. The chapter’s most anticipated event of the year increased cash flow by 20% from the previous year while increasing member participation by 22%. The 2023 Golf Tournament saw an increase of 33% in cash flow and maximized the amount of players allowed on the course. The chapter continued to expand attendance at its monthly meet and greets in Central Mississippi while starting a new monthly meet and greet in North Mississippi and kicked off its first major event in South Mississippi. The chapter retained over 90% of its membership over prior year while attaining a 10% net growth in membership.

The legislative committee created the ASA of MS PAC. Congratulations ASA of Mississippi on your growth and success.

San Antonio Chapter – Carlos Galvan, C.G. Steel Solutions
It’s hard to believe that Carlos just joined our chapter in January 2023, because it’s hard to remember a time when he wasn’t here. Since joining, he has been EVERYWHERE – serving on every committee! Carlos is the type of member that you always hope for. He is the first to volunteer, the first to show up, the first to smile no matter what he’s asked to do. Carlos’ commitment, passion, and enthusiasm make him an incredible asset to our ASA family.

Houston Chapter – Jennifer Simon, Hays Electrical Services

“You will only get out of it what you put into it.” That’s one of the mantras we instill in people when they join as members. Jennifer Simon took it to heart when Hays Electrical Services joined ASA in July 2022. Almost immediately, she rallied the troops over at Hays and got everyone engaged in ASA programs. Because of Jennifer’s commitment to fostering industry relationships between her team and other ASA members, in only one year, Hays Electrical Services has become one of the chapter’s most active member companies.

Mentor Award

San Antonio – Tom Freund, Comfort-Air Engineering
Tom Freund is a man who seems to be older than he is – this is predominantly due to his humble demeanor and wisdom beyond his years. Tom is the type of guy who will jump in to get things done, but he is always looking to inspire and encourage the next leader or trailblazer in the group. Tom is always pushing others into the spotlight and making sure that everyone around him is recognized for their achievements rather than boasting about his own. He encourages others, brags on their strengths and shows that he believes in them, even when they don’t believe in themselves, making people around him and the lives he’s touched, his living legacy.

Houston – Shannon McArthur, MEMCO

Shannon is a leader dedicated to providing an environment that is open to new ideas for growing Memco’s construction staffing business. Her tireless efforts directly benefit the construction industry at large by introducing new people into the industry. Not only does Shannon and her team participate in regional job fairs and high school trades days, this year, they opened a recruiting office at SER-Jobs, a nonprofit organization that helps individuals from low-income communities transform their lives through education, training, employment, and financial empowerment services. Their location at SER specifically targets and trains people new to the industry. As an ASA Houston Chapter board member, Shannon is also committed to ensuring the chapter is sustainable through offerings of relevant products and services. She serves on their awards committee, she leads their women’s peer group, and she provides mentoring and guidance to new board members and volunteers.

Community Service Award

Houston – Brianna Built It
The ASA She Builds It Women’s Peer Group held its second annual holiday gathering at an event which had been rebranded in honor of our late leader, Brianna Wright, who built the peer group from the ground up! Unlike the peer group events throughout the rest of the year, this She Builds It event was open to anyone in the construction industry (MEN, TOO!). The event kicked off the holiday season by raising money to help ASA families in need, a tradition Brianna started in 2018. Gift cards and cash were distributed to 16 families – making it the most raised since the event’s inception.

San Antonio – ASA Fishing Tournament

In February 2021, Texas was hit with a shocking cold-front that extended south to the coastal regions. Unfortunately, due to the freezing temperatures, an estimated minimum of 3.8 million fish were killed. When the numbers came out and our membership heard about the devastation, the ASA San Antonio Fishing Committee sprang into action. They made a decision that $50 from every team entry would be donated to Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) to help restock the hatcheries. Additionally, they decided to donate 10% of our final net profit to TPWD, and invited them to attend the event for a check presentation and to discuss the issues and needs. The Chapter took up an additional collection from the teams, and ASA was able to contribute almost $4000!

Chapter Growth:

Biggest Growth Number – Arizona Chapter

Largest Growth Percentage (21%) – Idaho Chapter

Above & Beyond:

Kenneth Moore KCM Cabinets, San Antonio Chapter

Kenneth is a man who is quick to put action behind his words. If he has an idea for a fundraiser, he will be the first one to sponsor the event. If he thinks that something needs to improve, he is the first one to volunteer. And when he believes in an organization, like he does in ASA, he gives 100%. When the San Antonio board of directors felt disconnect with ASA National, Kenneth stepped up to bridge the gap because he believed in the potential of open communication. He took it upon himself to get involved with the National office, and then asked to serve on the National board. Kenneth’s involvement allowed him to get clarification and information to bring back to the chapter to help members see the goals and understand the “big picture” of ASA. He became ASA’s best champion.

Andy Adams Adams Insurance Service, Houston Chapter

Andy is always ready to lend a hand, impart his wisdom, support a cause, sponsor an event, assemble the masses, herd cats, beg for money… you name it. Not only did Andy serve as the ASA Houston Board Secretary/Treasurer in 2022-23, he also led their Government Advocacy Committee. He spent countless hours each month serving as the chapter’s liaison with the Texas Construction Association (TCA), the legislative arm at the state capitol. In 2022-23, he led the charge for the TCA PAC, making the Houston chapter one of the largest groups of contributors in the state. Andy has an enormous passion for protecting and supporting the rights of subcontractors.
And if all that isn’t enough, Andy offered up his conference room and technical equipment every month for ASA Houston board meetings. He also volunteered space and his own staff resources for several safety training programs throughout the year. And, although he was one of our top-level annual sponsors, he went above and beyond by sponsoring all the She Builds It – women’s peer group events, the annual fishing tournament trophies, and all charity fundraisers. He also ensured that his team at Adams Insurance Service had the opportunity to participate in all of the ASA programs/events.

Travis MayorBilld, Austin Chapter

Travis is such an incredible board member. He is always willing to help the Austin chapter – website development, membership recruitment, sponsorship – you name it, Travis is involved. He’s the first to come up with ideas for events, volunteer his time, host meetings, etc. Austin is a young and relatively small chapter. Having a member like Travis is a total game changer. They…we’re all thankful for his support!

Brian Crisp, Enterprise Bank & Trust, Arizona Chapter

As chair of the education committee, Brian led with distinction. His inviting style was an asset in bringing the board, committee members, members at large, and GC partners to the table as they developed ASA University and its accompanying certification. Before Brian stepped in to chair the committee in 2021, the education committee existed primarily in the bylaws and had not met regularly for more than two years. Though the chapter has always provided quality education, our efforts had fallen short of what we knew we could achieve—and what members deserve.

Thanks to Brian’s oversight, ASA University has grown past a pilot year into a flagship program with its own individual and business certifications. ASA University now serves as a boon to the industry at large and a crucial membership funnel for ASA of AZ. Brian has also served on the chapter’s Finance Committee for two years, and he has distinguished himself by providing top-notch banking services and financial advice to ASA of AZ members.

Tonya  Schulte, The Profit Constructors, Arizona Chapter

Tonya recently won the ASA National Outstanding Service Award, but she has not rested on her laurels. She has committed countless hours of her own, as well as her company staff resources, to the AZ Finance Committee activities and the development of new financial processes for the chapter.

She also chairs our Membership & Marketing committee. This new committee combines two groups for efficiency, and in addition to growing the chapter, is responsible for safeguarding our brand in the association marketplace in AZ. Tonya has been an ASA University panelist twice, and has helped organize speakers for other ASA University sessions.
