ASA Leadership at Work
Back in September, ASA leaders were involved in a trio of events held in Grand Rapids, MI.
On September 20, members from across the country gathered to participate in the semi-annual Think Tank. The Think Tank committee is open to all members and meets twice per year to discuss important industry issues and association business. Think Tank helps guide the direction of ASA education and raises awareness of topics that are affecting subcontractors and the construction industry. Conversations from the Think Tank can be brought to ASA’s Board of Directors to take action on, commission research on, or develop education around.
As highlighted in ASA President Brad Miller’s letter to members this month, Think Tank participants covered topics ranging from the economy to workforce development and bank account fraud to safety. Participants dug deep into discussions on biocement, impact absorbing hardhats, worker safety and health monitoring, drug testing, and Artificial Intelligence. Another key topic he highlights is the DoD SkillBridge program (https://skillbridge.osd.mil/), which is operated by the Department of Defense to help service members learn new skills and gain experience in the civilian workforce. The next Think Tank is scheduled for January 17-20, 2024 in Baton Rouge, LA during Mini Committee Meeting Week.
That evening, the local Michigan ASA Chapter graciously hosted Think Tank participants, National Board Members, and regional members at Woodrows Duckpin Bowling where the group got to pick up conversations from earlier in the day and make new connections over a few pints of local brews, great barbecue, and surprisingly competitive games of duckpin.
The next day, on September 21, the ASA National Board held its Fall meeting, where we welcomed two new national board members, Dick Roberts from Arizona, and Rico Rivera of Southwest Florida, and discussed the strategic direction of the association. The board rallied around the revival of the Liaison Program and growth goals that are being focused on by staff. The next board meeting will be held in New Orleans during SUBExcel 2024.
