ASA Members Assist in the Construction of Uvalde’s Children’s Bereavement Center

When a tragedy happens, we all want to help. When the tragedy involves children, it’s even more heart wrenching. And when it’s in your neighborhood and you have the skills and equipment to help, you reach out.

Thanks to donations, initiative, and the skills, supplies, and equipment of several ASA of San Antonio members, the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas (CBCST) now has a permanent home in Uvalde, one year after the tragedy at Robb Elementary. It will continue providing resources to the Uvalde community on a long-term basis.

The center is ready to serve children in the community struggling to cope with residual trauma and grief. At our Center for Comfort and Consults, families are invited to relax, decompress, and connect with our staff. Grief support services offered include grief counseling, grief camps, and support groups for children and adults. Each family and each person has their own grief experience. All services are provided at no cost to families.

Many ASA Members took part in making this dream a reality by donating supplies and labor, including Robles 1 Demolition and Dumas Hardware Company. Greg Kanning, President of Dumas Hardware knew he had to help. “My mom’s family is from a small town near Uvalde, and I still know a lot of people there.” He added, “Our ASA chapter is amazing. I know if we could have organized this project, our chapter would have built the whole thing for free.” A super-active member of ASA for 27 years, Greg Kanning has served on the local and national boards, and was chapter president in 2004-2006.

Thanks to all of the ASA members around the country who chip in to help others in need with their construction expertise – whatever it may be.
